šŸŒž Staying Safe and Supported During Hot Weather šŸŒž

As temperatures rise, it’s important that we all stay safe and look out for our more vulnerable neighbours — especially older residents, young children, and those with health conditions. Here’s some essential advice and information about where to turn for help if the heat becomes more than just uncomfortable.

ā˜€ļø Keep Cool and Stay Well

• Drink plenty of fluids – even if you don’t feel thirsty.

• Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day (11am–3pm) and keep your home shaded.

• Use fans or a damp cloth to help cool down.

• Wear loose, light clothing and use sunscreen when outside.

šŸ’” Help with Electricity Costs

We understand that running fans or medical equipment in hot weather can cause bills to rise. If you’re a pensioner or on a low income, you may be eligible for help:

• Household Support Fund: East Devon District Council can provide short-term support for essentials like electricity and water bills.

šŸ”Ž [Check eligibility and apply on the council website or by contacting their Customer Services Team.]

• Warm Home Discount: If you receive Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit), you may automatically get Ā£150 off your electricity bill. The next round starts in October 2025.

• Priority Services Register: Sign up through your energy provider if you are of pension age or have a medical condition — you’ll get additional support like advance notice of planned outages and more.

• Speak to your energy supplier: Many offer hardship funds or payment plans if you’re struggling with rising costs.

šŸ§“ Let’s Look Out for Each Other

If you’re concerned about someone who may be struggling during this hot spell — especially an older neighbour — check in with them, and encourage them to seek support if needed.

Let’s stay safe, stay cool, and look after one another.
